The first part starts in 1579, dealing with the relationship between Queen Elizabeth and the Earl of Leicester and introducing Leicester's stepson, the Earl of Essex. The second part tells the story of Queen Elizabeth's affair with the Earl of Essex. Her emotions cloud her judgment and affect her decision-making over her kingdom.
In addition to being well received by the critics and getting a well packaged release from HBO, Elizabeth I also garnered awards from the Emmys, Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild, and West Bank Awards. | PROFESSIONAL REVIEWS |
"Hugh Dancy is likely to replace Orlando Bloom and Heath Ledger as the swashbuckling hero of this generation."
- Roger Friedman, Fox News
"Happily, she shares the screen with two men who can hold their own: an ideally cast Hugh Dancy, who takes over Monday as Essex, an appealing young man who seriously overestimates his appeal."
- Robert Bianco, USA Today
"Hugh Dancy makes Essex's impetuousness and ambition more than watchable."
- Chicago Tribune
"With due respect to Bette Davis and Errol Flynn in "The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex," the age disparity here, and Dancy's callow portrayal of Essex, make their relationship all the more fascinating, and at times a little creepy."
- Brian Lowry, Variety
"Irons is at his dashing best, but Dancy gets to evince more character development as Essex grows from an infatuated young man into a limelight-loving hothead."
- Rob Owen, Post Gazette
"Hugh Dancy, whose acting skills prove sufficient, thank God, to make us forget that he looks too much like Kirk Cameron."
- David Weigand, SFGate
"Essex is clearly a duplicitous creep, a fact emphasized by Dancy's fittingly shallow teen-idol performance."
- Matthew Gilbert, Boston Globe
"Both Irons and Dancy handle their roles with smooth conviction."
- Contra Costa Times
"Mirren is supported by equally grand performances from Irons and Dancy as two ambitious men who had the queen's ear."
- Salt Lake Tribune
