HUGH NEWS: Hugh Dancy, the other Hugh.
[ Posted on 21 Jun 2007 by Anna ] [ Read More • 1842 Comments ] [ View Archives ]
That other handsome British guy named Hugh is ready for his close-up, sort of.

If the stars align exactly right, Hugh Dancy's buzz-generating performance in the star-studded drama "Evening" may put him in the same stratosphere once inhabited by Hugh Grant.

"It's certainly not something that you think about while you're doing it," Dancy says. "I would like to think that my intuition about a role is not completely separate from everybody else's. If I read this and I think, 'That is an amazing role,' then of course I hope that, somewhere down the line, people will get that and agree with me.

"But it's not what you hold in your mind," he says. "You have to do it for yourself." Set for release on June 29 and based on the novel by Susan Minot, "Evening" centers on Ann (Vanessa Redgrave), a dying woman who recalls her complicated life, romantic entanglements and long-held secrets as her best friend Lila (Meryl Streep) and daughters (Toni Collette and Natasha Richardson) sit by her bedside. Ann's reveries take her back to a weekend 50 years earlier, when as a young woman (Claire Danes) she ventured to Rhode Island for the wedding of Lila (Mamie Gummer). Ann adores Lila's brother, Buddy (Hugh Dancy), but it's Harris (Patrick Wilson) who ultimately becomes the one that got away.

Buddy is barely mentioned in Minot's novel, but "Evening" screenwriter Michael Cunningham heightened his importance in the story, turning him into a catalyst for much of the drama. A life-of-the-party, F. Scott Fitzgerald type, Buddy drinks too much, often seems too giddy to be genuinely happy and may well be gay ...

and doomed.

However, if you're just dying to get yours in within the next five hours and twenty minutes or you want to make last minute corrections, send me an e-mail. I still accept them as late as Midnight Pacific Standard Time. After that, no go. My apologies. You had two weeks.

Also, congratulations to Hugh for being nominated for a Seattle International Film Festival Golden Space Needle Audience Award (exhale)! He could have taken home Best Actor for Evening (!) but lost to Daniel Bruhl of Salvador. I've updated the Awards page accordingly.

As an early birthday present, I also added a bunch of stragglers to the gallery. Exactly 21 stragglers, actually. I'm feeling a tad lazy and they're all accessible via Last Uploaded, so enjoy!

HUGH NEWS: One enchanted 'Evening' for Danes and Dancy
[ Posted on 17 Jun 2007 by Anna ] [ 0 Comments ] [ View Archives ]
Hugh Dancy and Claire Danes make a better couple in real life than they do in "Evening," the film that began their relationship.

The couple were among the stars who turned out to a special screening of the film Monday night, hosted by the Cinema Society and Donna Karan. Although their characters' union is doomed on screen, Dancy burst into a huge grin during a romantic scene in which he twirls Danes through a beautiful house in Newport, R.I.

Things got even steamier during the after-party at the Bowery Hotel.

The couple, who made certain to keep their distance from each other all night long, united to the strains of Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get it On" and surprised the few party guests left with their passionate make-out. The couple separated when they realized they were being watched, but Danes danced alluringly, champagne glass in hand, when the deejay played "Day-O."

The couple left for a diving trip to Hawaii on Tuesday, and Hugh told us he's "definitely staying around New York for a while."

The two were still there when the party shut itself down and were the last to leave.

HUGH NEWS: Report from the New York Post.
[ Posted on 14 Jun 2007 by Anna ] [ 0 Comments ] [ View Archives ]
SO, care to hear how a big-time major star who's not only the toast but the caviar of Broadway got herself ready for the Tony Awards telecast? Per Hugh Dancy, star of B'way's "Journey's End":

"Sunday afternoon, when everyone else was either rehearsing their lines or getting set to walk the red carpet or rehearsing in some way for the Tonys, Vanessa Redgrave was at our show. She came to the matinee. And was in no hurry. In a gesture very characteristic of her generosity, she even came backstage afterward to congratulate us all and tell us how much she loved it. Then what happened was, we actually gave her one of our dressing rooms to get dressed in to go right from us to the Tonys."

HUGH NEWS: Danes, Dancy Enjoy "Evening" Out
[ Posted on 13 Jun 2007 by Anna ] [ Read More • 0 Comments ] [ View Archives ]
Celebrity couple Claire Danes and Hugh Dancy are the toast of New York these days. They turned up Sunday at the glittering Tony Awards, where Danes was a presenter, and then celebrated Monday at the premiere of their new movie, "Evening."

The movie, which hits theaters on June 29, may well hold a special place in their hearts. Danes, 28, and Dancy, who turns 32 next week, confirmed to The ShowBuzz.com that they began dating after they finished shooting the family drama in Rhode Island.

On Monday, when they joined co-stars Glenn Close, Vanessa Redgrave and Patrick Wilson at the premiere presented by the Cinema Society and Donna Karan at the Chelsea West Theatre, Darcy spoke of Danes in glowing terms.

"She's an amazing actress, and most of my scenes were with her," he told The ShowBuzz.com.

Both actors also had praise for their other co-stars. "As is always true of good actors and actresses, they're generous and they raise your game up, and that's how I felt," Dancy said.

HUGH NEWS: Hugh Dancy & Claire Danes Plan Scuba Getaway
[ Posted on 13 Jun 2007 by Anna ] [ 0 Comments ] [ View Archives ]
Hugh Dancy and Claire Danes seem to be getting along swimmingly: After attending a spate of events in the last few days, the press-shy couple are planning a scuba-diving vacation.

"I've never scuba-dived, but hopefully, I'm going to, the day after tomorrow," Dancy told PEOPLE Monday at a Cinema Society screening of their film Evening in New York City. "I'm going on a holiday."

Asked if Danes was going with him on the vacation, Dancy said: "Yes."

But the actor, who just wrapped up a stint in the Tony award-winning play Journey's End, was coy about their exact destination. When asked if the getaway was to an island, Dancy would only say, "It's not a landlocked country."

He added: "I've never done scuba, but I'm not very good at those holidays where you do absolutely nothing, so I figured I'd learn to swim underwater." (Speaking of tropical getaways, Danes will be honored at the 2007 Maui Film Festival, to be held June 13-17.)

And Danes supports her beau's adventurous side. Backstage at Sunday's Tony Awards in the gift lounge, she requested an Invicta diving watch for Dancy, according to a source.

Dancy and Danes began dating while filming Evening in Newport, R.I. "We hadn't met before," Dancy said Monday. "It's an amazing place."

Danes recently told PEOPLE that she and Dancy "just happened upon each other because we were friends" – and Dancy told PEOPLE of the relationship: "I'm having a great time."
